Abstract

This study aims to analyze the strategies employed by Guidance and Counseling (GC) teachers to assist students in career selection a process often influenced by their parents' past experiences. The study utilizes a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, involving Grade XII students, parents, GC teachers, and the Principal of SMA Negeri 2 Tenggarong. The findings indicate that GC teachers implement strategies such as individual counseling, mediation, and fostering collaboration between students and parents to facilitate career decision-making. These strategies help bridge the gap in perspectives between students and parents differences stemming from the parents' own past life experiences. During implementation, GC teachers faced challenges such as low parental involvement and resistance during the mediation process. However, intensive and empathetic communication succeeded in increasing openness and parental support for the students' career choices. The results demonstrate that parents' past experiences are a crucial factor shaping their mindsets, expectations, and career orientations regarding their children; therefore, this factor must be considered when delivering career guidance and counseling services in schools. The novelty of this study lies in highlighting the role of parents' past experiences as a contextual factor that GC teachers must address when reconciling differing career perspectives between students and parents. These findings can serve as a reference for GC teachers in developing career guidance services that are more contextual, collaborative, and student-centered.
