This study is motivated by the phenomenon of aggressive communication among adolescents particularly in peer interactions which is often viewed as normal despite its potential for negative consequences. In reality, students employ aggressive communication in the form of profanity, mockery, and other verbal expressions during their daily interactions. This study aims to explore the meaning students attribute to their use of aggressive communication with peers, grounded in the principles of Choice Theory proposed by William Glasser. A qualitative phenomenological approach was adopted to understand the participants' subjective experiences. The participants consisted of six students from SMA Negeri 14 Samarinda who were identified as using aggressive communication in peer interactions. Data collection involved in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation. Data analysis proceeded through stages of data reduction, interpretation, theme identification, and descriptive presentation. The results reveal two primary themes: Internal Control Psychology and basic needs. The Internal Control Psychology theme indicates that aggressive communication is interpreted as a form of self-control in response to social situations and as a means to maintain one's position and relationships within the peer group. Meanwhile, the basic needs theme illustrates that the use of aggressive communication is linked to efforts to satisfy needs for belonging, recognition, and freedom during peer interactions. These findings demonstrate that aggressive communication is not merely negative verbal behavior but holds subjective meaning related to how students fulfill their psychological needs. The results can serve as a foundation for Guidance and Counseling teachers to understand student experiences and design services that align with psychological needs and peer relationship dynamics.
