Abstract

Self-esteem is an important component in adolescent psychological development that reflects how individuals assess and value themselves. Fatherlessness, whether due to divorce or migrant work, can be related to limited involvement and emotional support of fathers in adolescents' lives. This study aims to determine the differences in self-esteem in fatherless adolescents based on their background of divorce and migrant work. This study was conducted at SMA Negeri 2 Bontang using a quantitative approach and comparative design. The research respondents were 64 students in grades X and XI who experienced fatherlessness, namely not receiving optimal father involvement due to parental divorce or father's work as a migrant worker. The entire population was sampled using a total sampling technique, consisting of 32 students in the divorce group and 32 students in the migrant work group. The research instrument used a modified Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) that has been tested for validity and reliability. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and independent samples t-test. The results of the independent samples t-test showed a significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) of 0.858 (>0.05). These results indicate no significant difference in self-esteem between fatherless adolescents due to divorce and migrant workers at SMA Negeri 2 Bontang. Therefore, the hypothesis stating a difference in self-esteem between the two groups is not supported by the research results.
