Abstract

Primates of the family Hylobatidae are a group of high-conservation-status primates kept in ex situ conservation facilities. Environmental conditions within these facilities, including the presence of visitors near the enclosures, can influence variations in the animals' behavioral responses. Describing how Hylobatidae respond to visitors is essential for understanding their behavioral patterns under varying visitor conditions. This study aimed to describe the behavioral responses of Hylobatidae primates to the presence of visitors and to characterize these response patterns on weekdays versus weekends at Rahmat Zoo and Park, Serdang Bedagai Regency, North Sumatra. Conducted in April 2026, the study employed a qualitative descriptive method using the focal animal sampling technique. The subjects consisted of five individuals: two Hylobates lar, two Hylobates agilis, and one Symphalangus syndactylus. The results identified four categories of behavioral responses: affiliative, neutral, agonistic, and submissive. Neutral responses were the most dominant category, manifested through activities such as sitting, swinging, hanging, moving, and feeding. Hylobates agilis tended to exhibit neutral responses on both weekdays and weekends, whereas Hylobates lar and Symphalangus syndactylus displayed agonistic and submissive responses during periods of higher visitor density. These differing behavioral patterns provide insight into Hylobatidae behavior under various visitor conditions and offer valuable information for animal management and visitor activity regulation to support animal welfare in ex situ conservation facilities.
