Abstract

This study aims to inventory fish species, analyze morphometric and meristic characteristics, and examine the ethnozoological aspects of fish in the Ogan River, Talang Pangeran Ulu Village, West Pemulutan District, Ogan Ilir Regency. The study was conducted using a survey method through fish sampling and interviews with six respondents from the local community. Fish diversity data were analyzed descriptively, while morphometric, meristic, and ethnozoological data were analyzed using quantitative and qualitative descriptive approaches. The results showed that 24 fish species were found belonging to six orders, 14 families, and 23 genera. The Cypriniformes and Siluriformes orders were the most dominant groups found. Morphometric and meristic characteristics were used as a basis for describing and identifying each fish species. Meanwhile, the results of the ethnozoological study showed that fish are used by the community primarily as a food source, both for direct consumption and as raw materials for processed products typical of South Sumatra, such as pempek, pekasam, kemplang, and brengkes. In addition to their consumption value, several fish species also have economic value and are used as ornamental fish and traditional medicinal ingredients. This research can provide scientific information on fish diversity, morphological characteristics, and local knowledge regarding the utilization of fish resources, thus providing a foundation for aquatic resource management and conservation efforts.
